We waited 4 years for the FIFA World Cup to return, and as always, it was worth the wait.
The worst ranked teams in the 2018 FIFA World Cup opened the competition. Russia kicked the tournament off with Saudi Arabia, playing the first game of the tournament and the first game of Group A.

Russia extends the streak of host nations avoiding defeat in their opening match of the World Cup.
The importance of the first match plays a major role in picking a game plan for the remainder of the preliminary stages of the competition. Host nation Russia kicked off the 2018 FIFA World Cup with a massive ‘5-0’ victory over Saudi Arabia. Russia secured a healthy goal-difference and the maximum points from their opening game.

Saudi Arabia seemed to count on their athleticism to carry them through the match. After a decent start to the game, Yuri Gazinskiy opened the scoring for the tournament in the 12th-minute to give Russia and the winning goal in a ‘5-0’ thrashing of Saudi Arabia. Apart from Alan Dzagoev sustaining an injury and forcing a substitution in the 24th-minute, it was a perfect start to the 2018 FIFA World Cup for Russia. Denis Cheryshev came on to replace Dzagoev and finished the match with two goals to his name. With just a 3-minute injury time on the board, Russia managed to increase a comfortable ‘3-0’ lead to a ‘5-0’ victory. The icing on the cake was Aleksandr Golovin’s freekick goal to end the match.

It looks like Saudi Arabia has two more matches left to play in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. For Russia, the hope is that Saudi Arabia isn’t that generous when they meet the other teams in Group A. The objective for Russia is to get a positive result (preferably a win) from their match against Egypt.
