All the reasons why Germany is on course to have a bad 2018 World Cup

Why Germany might not win the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Leaving Manchester City’s Leroy Sane out of the 2018 World Cup would have been a major blow to most teams, but Germany is not like ‘most teams’.

Germany showed the traits of a champion by winning every 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying match, scoring 43 goals and conceding just 4.

But history does not side with Germany to lift the cup at the end of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Here are the reasons why Germany will fail to qualify for the knockout stage.

The recent results are lacking ‘wins’

Despite being first to get a goal, Germany’s most recent friendly match ended in a ‘2-1’ away defeat to Austria.
Germany was winless in their recent friendly matches which also happened to be against other top-tier teams – A goalless draw with England, a ‘2-2’ draw with France, and ‘1-1’ draw with Spain and a ‘1-0’ defeat to Brazil.

Football will make you superstitious.
No team topping FIFA rankings before a World Cup tournament has gone on to win the FIFA World Cup. Germany is currently ranked as #1 by FIFA.
No team that has won the FIFA Confederations Cup the year before they won the FIFA World Cup. Germany defeated Chile ‘2-1’ to win the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.

European teams have suffered to defend their title.
Since the expansion from 24 teams to 32 teams in the FIFA World Cup tournament, defending champions have failed to advance from the group stage. Brazil is the only exception. – Basically, teams from Europe have suffered after winning the World Cup.

1998 – France wins their first FIFA World Cup title
2002 – France is knocked out of the tournament in the preliminary stage after going winless and finishing at the bottom of ‘Group A’. They lost ‘1-0’ in their opening match against Senegal (a World Cup debutant), played out a goalless draw with Uruguay, and then suffered a ‘2-0’ defeat to Denmark.

2006 – Italy wins their fourth FIFA World Cup title
2010 – Italy is knocked out of the tournament in the preliminary stage after going winless and finishing at the bottom of ‘Group F’. It started with a ‘1-1’ draw against Paraguay and New Zealand, before a ‘3-2’ defeat to Slovakia.

2010 – Spain wins their first FIFA World Cup title
2014 – Spains is knocked out of the tournament in the preliminary stage after starting the tournament with consecutive defeats that caused them to finish third in ‘Group B’. Their only victory coming against after the lowest ranked team in the group (Australia). Both teams were already eliminated before kick-off.

Despite taking a lead in the opening game of Group B, Spain ended up on the wrong end of a ‘5-1’ score against the Netherlands.
Spain was eliminated after a ‘2-0’ loss against Chile in their second group match.

But there is some good news for the Germans.
Their worst showing since 2002 has been a semi-final finish. And they possess a plethora of talent to avoid upsets in their 2018 World Cup group. Germany is also the last European defending champions to advance from the World Cup group stage(1994), granted it wasn’t a 32-team competition.

Should Germany do what is seen as improbable and win a consecutive World Cup title, they will equal Brazil as record 5 times winners and the top 3 most successful nations (Brazil, Italy, Germany) will be the only ones to have been back-to-back champions.
